Psalms 23

The best kind of prayer is when he shows up, and there’s nothing left for us to do.

— Pastor Renee Evans

Listen to Pastor Renee Evans, senior leader of Bethel Austin, as she discusses how Psalms 23 relates to our relationship with the father.

Psalms‬ ‭23:1-6‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ reads, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies: You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

All throughout scripture we see God and man depicted as two different things, as a King and as a servant or as a master and as a servant. There are so many different analogies that King David could have pulled from when he was referencing the Lord, but he used the imagery of a shepherd because who better to know the ways of a shepherd than a shepherd.

In the bible we see that David would have given his life for his flock.  We also read that this is how he battled lions and bears. He would have laid down his life and he did often for his flock. They didn’t just go out into the field in those days and stay with them for the day, they pinned them up at night and then went back to their house.  A shepherd dwelt among his flock and slept among his flock.  Just like it says in John, that Jesus, the shepherd dwelt among us is this beautiful imagery of intimacy.
